evaluation procedures
The bellcate School approaches evaluation using a variety of tools and strategies. Self- assessments, teacher assessments, checklists, observations, and goal sheets are included everyday assessment.
The bellcate School uses a daily log approach to recording achievement, evaluation and participation. At the end of each class the student and teacher complete a log sheet together. The sheet details academic achievements, progression along levels of skills and goals and standards addressed. This practice serves to involve the student in evaluation of his or her participation and achievement, as well as offering an opportunity to appraise the program guide’s effort and planning.
Progression along a course of study is also measured by quarterly class proposals submitted by the teaching staff. Each quarter, bellcate program guides submit new class proposals adapted the students’ needs and progression during the previous quarter. These proposals outline class objectives, course of study, environments and settings to support the student’s growth and declare applicable Vermont Standards. The developing skills of a student can be observed by viewing the progression of their classes over the course of a school year or years.
The bellcate School provides bi-weekly reports of students’ outcomes, achievements, challenges and a summary of classes, by email or telephone. These reports are submitted to all members of the given student’s treatment team, including parents and guardians, community mental health supports, health care providers, mentors, LEA representative, Social and Rehabilitative Services case workers and other case managers. In addition, each student’s team meets monthly with bellcate in attendance.
Credits are awarded quarterly and submitted to the sending districts toward graduation. These quarterly progress reports include written assessment of students’ achievements in each subject area.
